Instagram is an incredible platform for business promotion; not only is it one of the most popular social media networks at the moment, but it’s also a great platform for showcasing your business and your products. One of the struggles with Instagram, however, is that you need to get followers and engagement – and the question is, what is the best strategy for Instagram growth?
There are so many opinions, so many studies and tests – which ones deserve your attention?
The issue is that so many only provide tips for growth – but what we really want to know is, which exact growth strategies actually work? What are the exact steps you need to take in order to get 100 new followers, 1000 new followers, 50% more engagement, and so on?
A few claims to have the answer – tested and proven. Let’s look into them.
CAN YOU GET 100 NEW INSTAGRAM FOLLOWERS IN 24 HOURS?
Agorapulse’s Social Media Lab is a recent project that aims to invest $15k every month in testing out different social media practices.
After finding a technique that promised to get them 100 new Instagram followers in 24 hours, they decided to test it.
Spoiler alert: they didn’t get 100 new followers in a day. But, that doesn’t mean that the method was a complete failure.
The idea behind the test is as follows:
- Optimize your Instagram profile – make sure it’s completely filled out, and you have a good profile image, and a link to one of your landing pages/product pages.
- Use 30 strategic hashtags – find relevant hashtags that have 50k-300k images per hashtag (so that you can get in the top 9 photos for a hashtag). Another point is that you should use your hashtags under a comment, rather than in the post itself, as they claim this leads to more engagement on Instagram.
- Post at least 3-4 times a day + 1 live video, and 5+ Instagram Stories – per day.
- Find 10 top competitors with over 50k followers – then, start following their followers, but no more than 50 per hour.
- Engage – this is always important and should be a part of any Instagram growth strategy. Reply to any comments, like others’ photos and videos, leave comments, repost images, and so on. Usually on social media, the more active you are, the more other people will engage with you in return.
I’ve already spoiled some of the results – i.e. it didn’t work, and they didn’t manage to get 100 new followers in 24 hours – but that doesn’t mean the experiment was completely worthless.
After testing this strategy for five days a week, a total of two weeks, the results were visible.
Furthermore, there was also an impressive increase in impressions and reach: 18% more impressions and 28% increase in reach – which, as they pointed out, is nothing to sneeze at considering they spent no money on this growth, just their time. And if you want to read more about the tactics used and the results, you can read the whole test here.
CAN YOU GET 300 NEW FOLLOWERS PER DAY?
Neil Patel is one of the most well-known, successful digital marketers around. His recommendation is a pretty extensive strategy – that promises 300 new, real followers per day.
Can you get 300 new followers a day, every day? Most likely not. His strategy (which you can read about in more detail here), in fact, has many similarities with the previous one:
- Create goals and objectives for your Instagram marketing.
- Determine your content strategy: what types of content will you be posting? The key is to diversify and provide a good mix of different types of content.
- Optimize your profile: like earlier, a complete profile is essential.
- Strategic hashtags: Neil too recommends using the hashtags in comments, rather than the actual photo.
- Posting schedule: 1-2 photos or videos per day, 5-30 Instagram Stories per day, 1 live video per day, posted at the exact same time every day.
- Follow targeted users: find the top competitors in your niche with a big following and follow no more than 50 users per hour.
- Be active: follow people back, respond to comments, engage with the people who engage with you, as well as with other users, send direct messages, and tag people in your photos.
- Partner up: find relevant influential users on Instagram and partner up to cross-promote content.
There’s a lot more to the strategy, of course, including using Instagram Ads. Now, will this technique get you 300 new followers every day?
It most likely won’t – especially not every single day and especially if you’re not aggressively following other people (and definitely never following more than 50 new people per hour, as per Instagram’s regulations).
This strategy is pretty much an extension of the first strategy I mentioned – there are many similarities, but there is also one big difference: this method also implies investing in Instagram ads.
All of this being said, it is still a great growth strategy. It won’t get you 300 new followers every day, but it will help you grow your account, get more followers, more engagement, and more reach.
CONCLUSION
If there’s one thing I would glean from these two strategies, is that:
- Hashtags are extremely important, both for reach and for engagement, and they should be strategic and posted in your comments section, rather than in your caption. As Neil Patel puts it,
“Hashtags aren’t for people to see. They are for people to find you.”
- You need to post loads of content every day: both strategies stress the importance of posting a mix of different types of content every day, multiple photos and videos, and at least 5 Instagram Stories per day – don’t worry if it feels like too much; just open your eyes to the world around you – there’s a lot that would make a good Instagram post (your office, your lunch, your pets, your new products, and so on).
- Follow users strategically – both strategies recommend you keep an eye on your top competitors and follow their followers, but never more than 50 per hour, so your account doesn’t get shut down
- And finally, engage – as I mentioned earlier, this is a big part of social media success, not just on Instagram.
What other strategies have you tried for Instagram growth? What results have you seen? Are there any methods that really work?
